Jen Christabel

I was born in Birmingham in the early 60s, but have lived in Devon for some 24 years. I first got into writing at a very young age and from this time until I was about 17, I concentrated on creating poetry and short stories. For reasons I do not recall, I abandoned writing completely and, as a mature student, went into Higher Education where I spent eleven years studying and became a part-time lecturer in history and teacher training. The educational system began to bore and disillusion me and I wanted to explore my more creative side. I had written for too many years on highbrow assignments/dissertations, and this does not allow for any imagination because of its rigidity. My genre is mystery and crime, although I do occasionally write the odd humorous piece to alleviate the tedium!

I also have an interest in genealogy and have been researching my mom and dad’s families for the past 6 years. I enjoy the interaction of board games (Trivial Pursuit and Cluedo) and the challenges posed by the Playstation games. Forensic science and criminology holds a tremendous interest for me and I think that this comes across in my writing. Something not to forget of course is reading! My favourite authors include Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Reginald Hill (Dalziel & Pascoe), W. J. Burley (Wycliffe) Colin Dexter (Morse) and R. D. Wingfield (Frost) and who can forget Agatha Christie!

A Friend In Need Just The Ticket Phoebe and Will

Quote: Jen Cristabel is a writer’s writer. She leads by example. She writes from the heart with brilliant imagination.  I have read Jen’s stories, her fiction as well as her poetry.  Everything she writes, in my opinion, is most excellent. Jen’s stories are so much fun to read. She has found the secret of combining just the right amount of suspense, humor, enthusiasm and intensity that make her stories grab you from the very beginning and hold you to her unexpected, surprise endings. Whether you are a writer yourself, or simply enjoy reading fine stories and poetry, I believe you will find Jen’s writings enjoyable and inspiring. It is one thing to claim to be a good writer.  It is yet another thing to prove one is a good writer by consistently producing writing that makes the reader want to come back for more. Jen Cristabel is this kind of writer. See for yourself. Lare

      The Bargain
Quote: “This is a seemingly simple ghost story with a chilling twist at the end- one to make the hairs on the back of your neck tingle” Sarah

Quote: The bargain is creepy, it sends shivers up and down my spine, it is a tale I can relate to in regards to old people having possessions taken away. It does make you think whether or not it is a wise thing to buy second hand items as after all they are somebody else's memories” Maz

Quote: A REAL ghost story, this one, with enough highly-visual terror to frit anybody. It'd make a very good short film. Neatly, you leave the reader with some work to do at the end, figuring out exactly what happened and what was coming next - was there only to be one victim, or was the picture to make a mysterious re-appearance and claim another victim - was this the first? Who knows...scary stuff! Roy

This story is about to go to a publisher and we wish Jen lots of luck with it.

      Johntorman
Quote: “Johntorman was one of the most anticipating edge of seat for next installment I have read in a long time, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and it kept me guessing all the way through. I'm not normally a person who reads murder mystery stories but must admit this one had me gripped” Maz

Quote: He's a VERY naughty boy, isn't he? A good, strong intro to this, then plenty of twists and turns later...a cracking read that leaves the reader wanting more. Loads of ways this one could go!” Roy

Also about to go to a publisher and we wish Jen lots of luck with this fine story.

      Mr Trubb
Quote: “Everything was right down to the last detail - even his name! Well done - a 'great read' IMO” Ann

Quote: “I remember this, but that didn't spoil it - well worth another look. I like this Trubb guy's style. There were several ways this could go, but it could have been worse... you could have been thinking of Rillington Place! Great story” Roy

Quote: “...new writers with little gems like this. Nicely scribed. I give it nine: there's no way you are going to get away without a rating from me!” Griffonner
