ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Nearly everyone has the potential to be an entrepreneur, rather than just a talented minority, business guru Sir John Harvey-Jones has claimed.
Harvey-Jones said that four in five people in the UK had the ability to go it alone, and encouraged people of all backgrounds to consider starting up a business.
The star of the 'Troubleshooter' TV series said claimed that entrepreneurial talent was not genetic and can be nurtured within almost anyone over a period of time.
"Almost everybody has it in them. The ability to be an entrepreneur is not necessarily a gift, which is granted to a chosen few.
"Those who believe that they could possibly be successful in business and have the energy to give it a try should seriously consider their options," he said.
Harvey-Jones identified two key ingredients to being a successful entrepreneur - commitment and imagination.
Commitment - without significant commitment on the part of the entrepreneur, there is no guarantee that the business will succeed.
Whereas large businesses have shareholders and boards of directors to keep the business heading in the right direction, small businesses rely solely on the commitment of the entrepreneur to ensure that they are heading at the right direction an in the right speed.
Imagination - the most successful entrepreneurs are those that think laterally and come up with creative solutions. Those people that are able to break the paradigm of a particular market or sector or niche are the ones who are usually very successful. The original idea is a key element in being a successful entrepreneur.
Harvey-Jones said that with the right advice and support, an initial business idea can flourish into a viable business plan.
"This is the essence of being an entrepreneur. It's about seeing an opportunity, seeking the right advice, making plans, believing in yourself, and making it happen," he said.
Harvey-Jones is patron of the Business Startup Exhibition 2004, which starts on May 9 in the NEC. For your free ticket, click on www.btstartup.com
