BEFORE STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Before starting your own business there are several things you should think about, starting with your reasons for wanting to go into business for yourself.
Some more common reasons are to be your own boss, to be able to act on your own ideas without them being overseen by another party and of course, financial independence.
Do you know what type of business you would like to start, or are you still deciding what is right for you?
If you already have an idea do, you know what services and/or products you will offer and is your idea practical? Check out the competition. What can you do differently that will give you an edge.
If not, start thinking about how you like to spend your time and what type of useful skills you have. Try thinking about the things that have interested you in your past positions to see if you can incorporate them into your plans. Also, talk to friends and family for their thoughts on what they feel you should be doing. After all, they are the ones that know you best after yourself.
You must also think about the business aspect of your plan. Address any legal issues, what type of insurance coverage you will need, what type of equipment and supplies need to be leased or purchased, and what is the minimum compensation you can live on while getting started. You also need to consider locations, will you be able to start by working from home or do you need to find an outside space to rent. Do you already have the resources to get started or do you need to investigate financing options. Try discussing your plans with an experienced friend or colleague that can offer invaluable advice and maybe offer some life lessons they have learned along the way.
Finally, you will need a name for your business. Sometimes a name can be a significant part of a successful business. Try to think of something that is not only catchy but gives the potential client a feeling that they are dealing with someone reputable. Ultimately, though, good business practices will lead to good word of mouth.
